John, How did you figure out how much it sold for? Were you on site? I was bidding on lot 12 - pretty much what I figured was a low-ball bid because I didn't have the money or the real need. But I'd like to know what someone else thought it was worth.

I was at the auction, but you can see the prices online if you go to the catalog here John

S&W revolvers have appreciated faster than most other collectable firearms in the past 5-7 years. I got most of mine on the way up, have sold a few at attractive prices, I continue to occasional buy and hope the appreciation trend continues. There are probably 3000 folks viewing the S&W Forum right now.
Conversely (IMHO) Colts, Winchesters, single shot rifles and double shotguns have peaked and have either leveled off or depreciated overall.
(P.S. I dropped out in 1967, supposed to graduate in '69. )

Thanks John, I don't know why I couldn't see that before.
It seems that RIA price estimates are always woefully short of realization. But, in this case, I was well aware of that and just hoping to get lucky.
Thanks again.

Steve: I'm lucky in that way, my cabin and land sits as the crow flies, approx. 600 yds up hill on a crested butte, from the river. In elevation I am 189 feet above the river at the homesite and 134 ft. above at the lowest point on the 185 fenced acres. Close enough too walk, to high to flood...unless it's the FINAL,BIG ONE!
Jerry
p.s. I was there in 2011, the roads to Billings were under 3.5 ft. of water, LOST A LOT OF BEAUTIFUL DEER!

I had followed, and bid, on this one, but wasn't willing to go higher without more info. Opinions on this nice William Evans rook rifle? From the pictures the seller had sent, the wood and colors are all original. The engraving is sharp. It appears to have started out as a long .300 (a Sherwood?) and later was re-bored to 38spl, and then re-chambered into a 35/30 wildcat. It also seems the scope, while added by the maker, was added later. thoughts? http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=396672849

What's to know? Looks like a great rifle, all load development done, shoots accurately, nice wood, metal, scope and great finish: just have to bid enough to buy it! Or ask the seller what the reserve price is??

I asked the seller...reserve was $4200. I had gone to $3400 but wasn't sure how much higher to go. I got hung up on paying $4K for a rook rifle, even if beautiful.
A rule I try to live by when buying guns is never to get into a piece for more than I could sell for if my interests changed. Because I pretty much always find my tastes do change. I just didn't know what this one was worth; only that $3400 seemed safe given the maker and condition.
But it's good to know it seemed a great rifle to someone who knows more about this than I do. I have a feeling I'll regret letting this one go...

My wish list had a remington No 7 on it until Vegas. Now I am off to the next thing which is a 22 shot browning auto. Saw one at Tulsa a couple of years back. But someone had more dollars than I. Happy hunting to all John Mc
