Have been searching on-line for some reading material on the subject of British shotguns to entertain me while I enjoy the warming, evening fire!

British Shotgun by Crudginton (3 volume set?)

or

British Gunmakers by Brown (2 Volume set?)

Any opinions about which to order? ...or is there a better choice that I should consider? ..or should I order both?

They are both 3 volume sets now Corkdecoy. They are excellent books for reference. I find the Brown ones easier to read. Be aware though, they are large and heavy books; when reading in bed before 'lights out' nodding off is not recommended. Ask my nose how it knows that!

Also "Birmingham Gunmakers" by Douglas Tate. Or any of Dig Hadoke's books.

I have British Gunmakers vol 1(London) & vol 2 and i have to say they are both great,it has information about the gunmakers&companies and as well as where and how to find the records of the guns.I would say order them both if you are interested in British shotguns they are great references.

All the best!!

Are you referring to the books, "The British Shotgun" by D. J. Baker and I.M Crudgington?

Their volumes are a must have reference for the British shotgun as they list all of the patents. I have all 3 volumes and use them extensively as a reference while reading other books about the English shotgun.
I would vote for “The British Shotgun” but all 3 volumes, because you’ll have to buy their books sooner or later so you might as well get them now. smile
