Never a mistake to post pictures of Mr. Owen's work.

That is a representative rifle and it's one my favorite Owen rifles. Could you post pictures of that quarter rib and front sight?

Marc,

I'll look but not sure I have good close-ups of the sights. Will have to put that on my to do list.

I started the Owen thread so I could get motivated to try and get some better pictures of the Remington Model 12. I'm still not happy but a little better.

My interest in Bob Owen for the last couple years has been his very early work. Not much out there but I keep looking. A year or two ago on Ebay there was some Owen Brothers correspondence along with a couple pictures.

I believe that one of the members here was the high bidder and if all possible I would like to get a high-resolution scan of all the rifles including the one on the letterhead.

I would be happy to cover any cost of copying and shipping.

This is the earliest Owen I have ever encountered. It was very confusing at first because it has a horn buttplate, Schnabel forend and a rounded bottom pistol grip without cap. None of the things you would associate with Owen. Also the rifle had been sent to G&H at one time for a side mount, barrel-band sling swivel and front sight.

I'm not sure why more of these have not shown up over the years.

I had everything set up so I grabbed the Owen and took some sight pictures.

The way that Owen got such a low front sight was he used a Lyman 1903 Base and a Mauser slide which has a straight arm unlike the 1903 sight. To get this even lower he milled down the rear bridge. Notice that he also removed the windage knob and slotted the shaft for a screwdriver. The magazine cutoff was also rounded to accommodate the lower sight.

Owen's work is beautiful ... But I can't take my eyes off the stock on the Remington pump-action rifle. I've been looking for a stock blank that might produce a similar pattern for the last few years with no success. The mineral lines make it look like flames.
Thanks for posting the photos!
