Is the small square sided cut at the top of the pattern on the Pachmayr rifle for the bolt handle(?).
I like the trigger guard shaping,,Single Set trigger?

yes it's for the swept back handle, I believe the trigger is single-set.

The rifle is not mine, If I had known years ago what I know now of August Pachmayr's work I would have have bought everyone I ever came across, which was not many.

Brent;
The Ballard must have just wanted to go home with me and I couldn't say no!

Michael;
I haven't been able to find any history beyond the previous owner. The stock is old and is serial numbered to the rifle with the same period lettering. Also the butt plate is numbered to the rifle. I really can't determine if it was factory or not. Brent was a friend of the previous owner (Roy Watson) and they had discussed the unusual stock pattern, but neither had seen one like it. It is serial numbered as a late Ballard #10, Junior, in the 31,xxx range. Caliber is 38-55, with a 32" barrel.

For many years, I shot next to that rifle every 2nd and 4th Saturday from April through September and always enjoyed seeing it. Roy didn't know anything about the history of the rifle, but he sure liked it too. It shot pretty well for him also. It was one of his main rifles when he was at the top of his benchrest shooting days.

The stocked was originally carved on mainland China in the 1930's for a Lt. in the Marines. Later a Lt. Col. (F.B. Conway) got the stock and sent it or took it to Germany and had one of Kurt Jaeger's engravers do a 1922.

Later he learned that the dragons on the stock were happy dragons and the ones on the rifle were unhappy ones. I have no clue where the rifle is today.
