Hi:

For some reason, I find rubber recoil padsugly on a classic sporter. Only Neidner steel butt plates apper to be correct. Am I missing something?

Oh yes, a classic stock appears to be unfinished if it is not fitted with an ebony or horn foreend cap. Am I living in the past?

Opinions?

different strokes for different folks. I like a Rigby style short fore end with no tip. A nice horn plate is top choice to my eye, but steel plates are nice too. Recoils pads? I can take them or leave them, often depending on the caliber, though my .404 built by Jeffery has steel plate and shooting it does not bother me.

I prefer heel and toe plates or engraved case colored steel with a full length forestock and horn cap. No plastic or rubber parts, and please no laser cut stocks or metal.
I know I am living in the past.

I don't mind the Silvers pads so much if they're on a rifle that deserves one. A Pachmyer with a white line spacer makes me want to regurgitate. I have a hard time with any kind of recoil pad on light recoiling rifles or guns. Skeleton butt plates and grip caps are about as good as it gets for my eye but a horn buttplate and horn Schnabel forend are equally nice.

Depends on the rifle. A Silvers looks right on a big Brit stocked mag or double, maybe an A model Mauser. Any other pad just looks WRONG. Anything with holes in it should be removed by order of the Gun Decency Police. White line spacers; capital offense.
I personally don't care for anything other than horn for a forend tip, even ebony is a point loser for me.

I disagree with you on recoil pads being ugly, however I prefer the looks of skeleton buttplates and gripcaps. My dislikes are gold inlays and engraved stocks, I have yet to see any that doesn't make the gun look cheesy.

I will definitely agree, and definitely disagree about the engraved stocks. It seems to me that 99.9% of engravings on bolt action stocks is very distasteful, especially carvings that include animals. However a well done Kentucky rifle or one of the very old German type percussion or single shots can be true works of art.

How do you feel about a well done leather covered pad?

I like well fitted Pachmayr 'Old English' Decelerator pads. Yes, you're missing out on some felt recoil reduction.
