Has anyone stripped the classic trigger plate lockwork (eg Dickson/MacNaughton/McKayBrown)? I have an 1880's MacNaughton which is ropy on the stock and barrel front but the lockwork is in good condition - just needs a good clean. I am considering restocking and barreling as these guns are worth restoring. I cant see how to safely take the load off the mainspring or indeed the sear spring - is there a special clamp for these actions?
Many thanks

Hi.
I think the old adage is the best in this situation “if it aint broke don’t fix it” especially if it is working, just clean the trigger plate as it is I find an ultrasonic cleaner works extremely well and lubricate it when dry. Taking any spring loaded mechanism apart is always half a step from a disaster.

There is a technique but I would not advise as it is possible to do damage and that is expensive . Best just to wash out with a spirit based product [white spirit, meth's,etc. ]and oil .

The dissassembly procedure for the mainsprings on the Macnaughton is different from the Dickson/DMB. Doing this by-the-book you should be using a specialist horse-shoe spring clamp (you have to make this yourself) to remove Macnaughton springs. This clamp increase the tension in the bow enough to lift the claw on the limb end out of the triggerplate. Do not be fooled into thinking you can use a combo of pliers and vise-grips, you will just end up cracking it.

The Dickson roller-cam bow mainsprings are under very little tension in the fired position and so have tabs on the limb end to lift them out of the triggerplate without a clamp.

BUT...as my learned UK friends above state, best left alone. These bow springs do not like being tampered with (especially after 130 years) and the last thing you want is to crack one, they are about Ł250 a piece to get a new one made properly.

Yes, use the right gear for disassembly.

FP is right on the money with the cost of new springs. I made a new pair for a very early Dickson a couple of weeks ago, along with a lot of other parts the bodgers had been at, so I can attest to that.
