Please correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to remember that an 'E' over 'L C' in an oval cartouche was a Belgian proof mark. I tried the search engine, but I couldn't find it. I just don't want to give a buddy some bad info.

Thanks, m-4. Sometimes I don't trust my memory.

The letters as I see them are not E/LC but rather E/LG.
With kind regards, Jani

WOW! Thanks guys, I knew that I could count on you! I guess that it was a 'G', rather than a 'C', but that was just wear. Gun is about a 20 ga. percussion half-stock single barrel, basically a late trade gun. I had to replace the under lug and re-pin the barrel to the stock, as the owner wants to shoot it.

The Belgians were making trade guns well into the 1930's. They were mainly marketed in Brazil and the Belgian Congo. I have had older muzzle loader's from Belgium as well. The gun industry was thriving there for centuries. The museums in Belgium are filled with wonderful examples of the older guns. Pete
