Mayhaps we could get Michael to provide a handful of those slugs and we could paper patch them to see if my prediction that they would turn out at .228" is true? I would volunteer to try them in a .22 HiPower.

.228 - .199 = .029 / 2 wraps or 4 total paper layers would be ~.007 to ~.0075 paper thickness which would be very stiff paper.

I suppose you could go 3 wraps or 6 layers which would be ~.005 paper, which is more normal, however I have never tried that many wraps so can't say if it would work or not.

I think that they were slugs for a .228/.229 gun however I think copper cups more likely. IMHO

American paper-patched bullets were BORE diameter not groove diameter. If this mould was for PP bullet there would be a swag to make them the right size and shape. As they are now they would be a poor candidate for PP.

Michael that's the best explanation of the mechanics of paper patch I've ever read - far better than some of the books I've tried to decipher. Now I know why I couldn't get my Shiloh Sharps to shoot PP worth anything. (As long as you stood in front of the muzzle, you were safe.)

So, over the life of the barrel, is the paper pretty destructive to the rifling? I can imagine it being very abrasive and taking the gilt edge out of the throat pretty quickly. I was never allowed to cut paper with my grandmother's sewing shears, for instance.

Ryan,

Sorry for the delay, I've been off line most of the last three weeks.

Thanks for the kind words about the article. I never intended to write about PP bullets until I and a few friends read an article by a well known author telling how to "FIX" the old rifles that would not take a groove diameter bullet and even telling about a company that made a reamer for this.

As these things go it took a while between the two articles and I got at least two nasty letters because these folks had already ruined their rifles and they were mad at me because I had not written a rebuttal in a timely matter.
