Researcher, I checked a couple of the 1897 Baker Quarterlies and their description of the Pigeon gun only says fluid steel, without any comment on source or type of steel. I wonder what kind of fluid steel they were using .

My barrels have that look but I don't see the markings as on yours. See below for some additional pics

My marks were nearly struck off during the barrel finishing and my gun is heavy. A lighter weight gun may have just lost those marks.

With apology up front for the blatant "coat tail", while the Baker experts have their serial number lists out can anyone tell me the date of manufacture on a Folsom era 20ga Batavia Leader S.N. 4101F?
Thanks...Geo

George, the years are best guesses. 4101F is a bit unusual, but a Folsom gun. If you number does not have another digit, probably made in 1920, give or take. As to no. 480, probably 1898. The 46,000 range gun somewhere between 1915-1919.

The earliest mention I've run across of the "pigeon gun" is in an article titled: "The Sportsmen's Exposition of 1897" that was printed in the April, 1897 edition of Sportsman's Magazine. I've got a copy of the Baker portion of the article along with other "clippings" about Baker here:

https://sites.google.com/site/bakerguns/home/baker-clippings

The author references Baker's asking price as $80
