I've had this E.M. Reilly case hanging around in the garage for years and now I think I'm going to try my hand at restoring it. As you can see, the leather is shot but the wood is in pretty good shape and all the hardware is there.
I have a couple of questions.
1. I just noticed that the handle is positioned on the back of the case, on the hinge side. I don't think I've ever seen one that didn't have the handle on the front. Is this common?
2. Does anyone have an idea what the partial label on the bottom of the case was from?
Thanks
gordon

Bet'cha the label is from a railroad. The first train in England steamed through Trowbridge on September 5, 1848.

Hi Gordon g

Having a handle on the hinge side of a gun case is not uncommon I have seen a number of them in fact one with that configuration sold on e-bay here not long ago.

Thanks for the help guys. You're probably right about the railroad label. I hadn't thought of that.

Gordon: The handle on the case for my E.M. Reilly 4 bore is on the hinge side while the lock is on the opposite side. I too believe that it is a shipping label.

Best Regards, George
