case colors are very pleasing to the eye...but not appropriate to a bolt gun, in my opinion...

I have had several PM's asking me about the following:

1. Yes Schilling does do Recolor and Recase Work for vintage shotguns. It requires Annealing and as to the cost and time for such work contact jim@Kromkasportingadventures.com

2. Jim Kromka related to me that he was present at the Schilling factory on 12/4/2012, when Doug Turnbull called Jorg and discussed a matter, so there does not appear to be any competition, between them.

3. I suggest any questions be sent to Jim regarding the custom forms which I understand can be handled by Jim for the shipper.

4. So far as Scholarly Studies/Papers published by Jorg I can't speak to their availability but I do know that his CCH processes are business proprietary and secret, so that [PUBLISHED DATA] will be something you will have to research online etc.. Hope this Helps! Jerry

Interesting choice of words. Some of the most beautifully case colored hunting arms in the world are late 19th century German repeaters built on the mauser 88 action. The extended magazine allowed a bit of space for the engraver and the appreciation of case colors. That tradition naturally extended to the model 98 when it came along, and virtually all the modern German makers use case colors to accentuate some of their very best grades of sporting rifles. The Blaser R8 Selous, for instance, is a true masterpiece - and case colors seem very "appropriate" indeed.

Not appropriate aesthetically, or metallurgically?

I myself don't have a problem with the case coloring on the rifle pictured above but I do have an example of case coloring gone wrong. I picked this Astra 400 up from a walkin at a gun show who knew nothing about it. I've always referred to it as my "Pimp Special"! In addition the small parts have been gold plated and the trigger and bolt machine turned.

Certainly Sir, H&H, Purdey, Boss, Westley all use St Ledger, top end Spanish guns also go there, in Italy, Bosis, Piotti and anyone else if you specify case colour will use Schilling. Hartman and Weiss use Schilling as well I believe, but since both are about to retire and have stopped taking orders that is irrelevant, best, Mike
