I have a damascus barreled English hammer gun and would like to get a consensus of which pattern I have. Anyone willing to post a pix for me if I sent it to them in an email?.....bit challenged in the www department....

It is believed to be 1880-1887 manufacture in the opinion of 2 quality smiths.

There are about three types of Damascus in this barrel. I will defer to Drew Hause to explain it.
You see this occassionally, likely finishing up a run of blanks for some guns to be shipped and not very particular about the aesthetics..

It's a somewhat inconsistent but nice 3 Iron; Damas Crolle', Hufnagle, or Oxford. Probably not quite 'English Best'. I would agree with Leighton that the barrel joiner didn't do the best job matching the tube patterns.
Love the rib!

This is a Richards and Son-Taunton Leighton refinished. Again, nice 3 Iron barrels but the patterns aren't the best match.

Aesthetically (which has nothing to do with strength but is reflected is cost/value), with 'Best' crolle damascus, every scroll should match, every ribband match, every inch breech to muzzle (very difficult to accomplish as the tube is ground thinner) should match. The artistry and skill involved is incredible.

Hi Max'
that looks like a Gibbs, is it ?
Man, it must've been tough to make two tubes that matched well.Did they have a pile of them on hand, & looked around for two as close as possible...or was your second bbl your second barrel, whether it matched or not?..I s'pose the $$ got you a better match.Boy, Damascus is amazing.
cheers Franc

I count 5 full size scrolls between two 1/2 scrolls; Steve Culver would count 5 zipper welds between the ribband end straight welds. Either way that means SIX IRON. Have never seen an English made 6 iron, nor a 6 iron that was not 'Turkish'

Max: could you please send me high resolution full size images of several sections of the barrels by jpg attachment to revdoc2@cox.net?
