Anybody load the Rem 223 with Win 748 powder as an acquaintance I met at the range the other day reckons that 25.5 grains with a 52 or 53 grain bullet with this powder is the Bees knees for this calibre.
Bought a can to try and looking up the recommended loads in seven different reloading books I found at the lower end of the scale for a 52 grain bullet a load of 22.5 grains to start and a max of 26.5 grains and at the other end of the scale in another book to start at 27 grains and a max of 29 grains for a 52 grain bullet.

I load the .223, however, I do not use 748. What I have discovered is that the best load for .223 is the load your rifle likes. I recommend first finding a powder charge that has acceptible accuracy and velocity without being over max. pressure. Then alter the seating depth using that charge to find the best combination. Every barrel is different. Also, try not to deviate from the exact powder/primer/case/bullet combination from the load book. Big changes in pressure can arise from substituting components, even primers and cases.

I have used a lot of H-335 powder, virtually identical to 748, with good accuracy in the 223. My loads are very similair to what you state in the first example.

My top load is 26.5 grains with great accuracy. This is of course in my rifle which has an after market Shilen barrel on a Ruger #3 action. I'd start at about 23 grains and work up.

My accuracy load is similar to Idared's i.e. 27 Grains of 335 with a 52 grain bullet. My rifle (purchased from a pawn shop) is a 700 Remington Varmint with an integral muzzle break (?)It's a barn burner!

Tried several loads with my single shot 223 Rem. 40XBR at 200 yards today and the photo shows the result.
Well tried to post a photo here but for some treason that I have not come across before I can't get one here.
Suffice to say that it shot just under an inch at 200 yards using 25.5 grains Win.748 and a flat base open tip bullet using Corbin dies and jackets and the bullet twenty thou. off the lands.
So strange that these loading books are at such variance with their listed loads.

Nero,

Photos need to be uploaded to a website such as Photobucket (free) and then the image code posted in your thread. I'd say your off to a good start.

I have had very good luck with 748 and 223/5.56 with the 55-64gr PowerPoint bullets and with 60GR nosler polymer tip bullets.

For heavier bullets, I use either TAC if I want to use a ball powder or Re-15 if going stick. Remington 7 1/2 primers when I can find them.

75gr Hornady OTM is also a very good bullet.
