My Stevens hammer double flopps open when I push the top lever but I'm sure that's NOT what it means...

A self opening gun is one that uses spring power to push the action open when the lever is pushed . There are several basic types that either use the power of the mainspring or those that use the power of an additional spring. Do not be confused with the likes of the Cogswell and Boss guns often falsely described as "assisted openers " as the ejectors have spring pressure on them which pushes against the face of the action when the gun has not been fired .
Your gun is just lose .

Aren't there some guns that seem to have assisted opening but really open and eject much easier because they do not cock on opening, but instead cock on closing? I seem to recall a Grant I handled that belonged to Terry Allen that cocked on closing.

Stan, the gun in question is an external hammer gun from Stevens. No assisted or self opening used for that type of gun. No ejectors or no self cocking hammers.

So right, Daryl. But, he wasn't asking about the Stevens, but instead about self-opening shotguns in general, as I understood the question, including the topic title.

Yes guys I was kidding about my Stevens...

I have doubles that cock on opening and ones that cock on closing. I figured the self/assisted opening had to do with spring assist of some kind.

Self cocking hammer guns are realy cool (way out of my league though).
