I am English, probably a socialist by your definition but I do object to being called a moron. And what pray, has socialism got to do with the pistol ban? It was brought in by the Conservatives.
And no, I doubt they will give him his pistol back. Although the jail term was ridiculous and the situation screamed for clemency and nothing but a stern warning, he should perhaps have known better than to keep a banned weapon and turned it over to the company armourer.
As regards earlier comments about our judiciary, our firearms law is black and white: possession of a weapon without the legal permission to possess results in a prison sentence. Period.
It may be nuts but a majority of our population voted in them that wrote the law!
Not me, I assure you.

Unfortunately, Sgt. Nightengale is still a convicted felon simply for possessing an object that millions of people in the US own, buy, and sell every day.

I'm glad he's out to spend Christmas with his wife and children.

I was informed that there was a bit more to the story than just the pistol. It wasn't really mentioned in the papers though.
Anyway. A happy ending for a man who has put his life on the line many times for his Queen, country and for the safety of innocent people worldwide.

Tony, YOu are certainly excluded from the Morons that voted for the ridiculous laws( we call them Liberals) to put forth such
irrational and punitive laws regarding firearms. They only punish the honest and encourage the criminals. Too many politicians seem to think they help their future by these feel good laws

Stallones, as Toby said, the pistol ban was brought in by a CONSERVATIVE government, not a Liberal or a Labour one, but the by the most right wing of our mainstream political parties.

I don't mind criticism of this country and I make plenty of criticisms of it myself, but let's get he facts straight before we lay the blame.

I can recall the party that sealed the pistol ban for responsible law abiding people. What I thought was significant was how easy it was to carry out due to the various documentation laws and seemingly public opinion.
