Not quite as 'classic' as some other stuff on this site, but I suspect that someone here will know the answer.

20ga (2 3/4" only) A5 with S/N: 6Z 8749

I visited the Browning site: http://www.browning.com/customerservice/dategun/detail.asp?id=13

So when was this A5 made?

Thanks Doc,

From that thread and the Browning website, I tend to agree.

1966 Light 20.

Then I went here: http://proofhouse.com/browning/a5.htm

The 'Z' code is shown in 1958??

You are welcome, I think what that means is the Z code was introduced in 1958.

Apologies.
In looking for this thread today, I realize I stuck it in the wrong forum!

I'm glad you did, because the information in it allowed me to date my ancient A5, SN 9984. It is a 16 gauge/60mm model with only the FN markings, no Browning markings on the barrel, unless they were hidden by the full length solid rib. It has a buttstock with a pancake cheekpiece, so I suspect it was originally sold in Europe and somehow made its way to Jacqua's in Findley, Ohio, where I discovered it on my way to Camp Perry years ago. According to the chart, it was made in 1924.

Hi xausa,

no, a 16ga with a four digit SN was made around (!) 1911.
Check this out:
