Just started getting a pierced primer on one (left) barrel in my double. Not bad but there are soot marks in the primers firing pin detent.

Shotgun is a well made pre war Austrian double, 16 ga, with low round count, proofed steel barrels.

Shells are Westley Richards Classic Game, 2 , #7 with 7/8 oz shot.

Firing pin protrusion is .0485 (L), .047 (R). So .0015 deeper on the offending chamber.

No obvious burrs or sharp edges on the firing pin.
Again, gun locks up tight,

Thoughts?

Hi Mike, I had the samething happen to me with one of my hammerguns. Mine was the result of headspace and the pin being to long. Mine also locked uo tight.

I sent mine (the whole gun) into Keith Kearcher and he fixed it in record time.

If the primer is being pierced with only the WR shells and not another brand, then of course, it's the WR shells.

Just to be on the safe side, I'd just have it checked out and have whoever does the work test fire it for you with the WR shells.

Good Luck!

Greg

Are both shell rims cuts the same depth? I had one double that had one chamber rim cut less than the other. One shell dropped further in than the other. Caused firing pin drag when opening. That gun also had seen little use. And it was very picky about brands of primers. Soft ones were a problem more than hard primers.

If both chamber areas are normal then I take a look at the shoulder area of the firing pin for wear or rounding. Is there any wear on one or both firing pins? Or you could either try another brand of shells or if lazy file the firing pin down. But that may just hide the real problem and I hate to alter firing pins or trigger parts unless I have no other choice.

Just made up a headspace guage on the lathe, looks like KY Jon is the winner. The rim on the offending chamber is cut .010 shallower than the other, that and the slightly longer firing pin totals .012
enough to cause the problem that I'm having.

Thanks to all

Mike
