What ever happened to Mr McIntosh's Purdey? Last I saw it didn't sell during his estate auction.

My understanding is there will be a follow up auction for all of the McIntosh items that didn't sell at the first auction. There are supposed to be new items added to the second auction, and items that didn't sell at the first auction are going to be reduced (starting price / initial bid). Fieldsports should be able to answer your questions.

Thanks, I'm sure that that Purdey was in nice condition and would be a good investment because of the providence.

Ted, it was sleeved. I believe they had a $12,000 price on it! Nice island action gun though.

Here's the description that was in the auction:

"J. Purdey & Sons, Island side lock, Hammer gun. This is circa 1883, Purdey 12 bore with 29 ľ” sleeved steel barrels and 2 ľ” chambers. The barrels retain the original concave top rib. The bores are both .722 and are choked: Right .012 / Improved Cylinder & Left .022 / Modified. The gun features double triggers and extractors. The stock is vintage Purdey and a classic straight grip with a burgundy leather covered recoil pad by Michael’s close friend and fellow author, the great gunsmith, David Trevallion. The stock dimensions I assume were bent to Michaels specifications of: DC: 1 9/16” x DF: 1 ľ”+ @ 5” x DH: 2 1/16” x Cast Off at Face: Ľ” x Cast Off at Heel: 3/8” x Length of Pull: 15 1/16” w/ 1 ˝” down pitch. The gun weighs in at a perfect 6 lbs. 12 oz and balances ala McIntosh at 7/8” in front of the hinge pin. The serial number is: 12417. Michael McIntosh and hammer guns were made for one another and I am confident Michael loved every second he worked on his project Purdey hammer gun with David Trevallion."

What's so wrong with sleeved guns if properly done?

The problem isn't the sleeving (usually) it's that $12,000 price tag on a sleeved gun.

If common sense is an assault, well, so be it.

How can anyone find fault with a Purdey that David Trevallion must have certainly inspected and possibly have done some work on for his best friend Michael? I'm not suggesting David did the barrel work but my guess is that MM probably brought this gun to David and said "Whaddaya think David"

Deer Creek doesn't see anything wrong with a sleeved gun and opines that MM "providence" adds value. I think we are back to the $12,000 price tag as the problem with this gun.
