SkeetTx & Grouse Guy,
I took the pictures of the Japanese single barrel to a Japanese gun dealer. Here is what he said:
Also the single barrel shotgun you asked about is an SKB. The Kanji (Japanese) written is the company name and personal name of Mr. Sakaba Munenari. He manufactured the guns from 1833 to 1911. Please note that SKB means--- Sakaba - name of person and SKB letter in it.
I will try to get an exact interprestation of the Japanese lettering on the barrels.
Sincerely, Patrick

Hello Patrick:
Thanks very much for your research on my old Japanese shotgun. Interesting that it was signed by Sakaba Munenari, but I guess that was the practice of the day across the board in fine arms manufacture.
It would sure be interesting to know what was hunted with it, but some things are destined to remain mysterious. What isn't a mystery is I plan to climb a few mountains here in western Montana to hunt mountain grouse with it....
Regards, Ben

Hey Steve:
Here our mountain grouse include spruce grouse, ruffed grouse and blue grouse (now officially named "dusky" grouse). Spruce grouse aren't so tasty (a bit like turpentine), but both ruffed and dusky grouse are wonderful sweet white meat.
Chase 'em sometime!
Grouse Guy
