If a British gun was sold in the US, at the given exchange rates for 1911 http://www.majorexchangerates.com/usd/1911-gbp.html (are they close?) what would 15 Pounds work out to be?

My math must be off....seems really high?

Edit...methinks I need a different link!

Best,
Mark

1911 is not the date, it's the number of US dollars. So:

1 USD = .6217 GBP's
1911 USD's = 1188.067 GBP's
15 USD's = 9.33 GBP's

$60 dollars would be equivalent of 15 gbp in 1911

Thank you Hugh for sorting out my fuzzication.

Would this not seem a bit of a $60 bargain at the time with a canvas and leather case, shipped from England??

A&N, Webley screw grip, 16 gauge, ejectors, 6 pounds...does seem odd to see such nice wood and drop points with so little engraving?

Bargain in the day?

Best,
Mark

I was a bit quick with the $60 figure. It would have been more like $74. If this was the A&N Co-op Soc Ltd price bear in mind this would be closer to the wholesale price not retail. To put it in perspective the 15GBP price would have purchased 3.8961 Troy oz of gold which would cost @ $6400 today.

Sounds like a bargan to me. I would happily pay $6400 today for a new cased boxlock of the quality of a Webley screw grip & especially one with nice wood as pictured.

Thanks but I've actually handled that particular gun. It's a W&S 700 series finished out by someone other than W&S. Nice enough gun but it is not a Webley screw grip, it's a long way from being a new a new gun & IMOP not as nicely finished as a W&S 701.

My point was that being able to buy a new boxlock of comperable quality to a Webley screw grip, cased & with good wood today for $6400 would be IMOP a bargan thus the 1911 selling price of the A&N Webley screw grip gun looks relatively cheap.
