A friend has what looks to be an unfired garden gun in 10mm, it is very similar to the "machine made" gun recently posted(belgian). Does anyone have a link to cartridge specs or know if a cut down .410 will work?

Thanks,
Mark

.410 is around 12 mm. Most garden guns were 6mm., 7mm. and 9mm. rimfire. 9mm. ammo is still available here in Europe with Fiocci and Hirtenberger being the main makers. I think the Eley stuff is now made for them by Fiocchi and some old French Gevelot can sometimes be picked up. Are you sure it is centrefire? Can't say I have ever come across 10mm. before either. If it is 10mm. centrefire maybe some pistol cases could be adapted to fit. Lagopus.....

Not having it in hand all I can remember is it has "10.0"(.395"?) stamped on the barrels, no chamber mark in the rhombus/rectangle and it is a smooth bore.

Thanks lagopus.

You can see that a cut 410 will not work.

A chamber cast would help ID the cartridge. There were a lot available, even more when you take the UK and Europe into account.

This is mine.

I also acquired this H&R 44XL sxs recently.

These 2 make a 410 seem a goose gun. Very limited range, perhaps 25 feet.

These are about as close as American guns came to "garden guns". There were also parlour guns, but they are all rifled rimfires.

That's a dinky little gun Pete. Looks like it might have been restocked as it has nice wood for a $10 gun. Thinking on I do have some .360 and .380 centrefire rook rifle shot cartridges in my collection. I have always assumed they were for occasional pot shots with the rifles as I have never seen a dedicated shotgun in this calibre. Virtually all the English and Belgian garden guns were single barrel. Lagopus.....

lagopus,

Yes, I had it restocked. They were marketed as hunting weapons.

We did have the single shots as well. I get a kick out this ad. Perhaps the only time I have heard of a single shot described as "Automatic".

Here is the H&R single shot version.

This is a Stevens Tip Up single shot in 44xl.

First shotgun I ever fired was a small frame single H&R in 28ga.
It weighed in at 4Ľ lbs. I think the bbl was 28" but not certain now. It belonged to an uncle, married to my Mother's sister.
