John Humphreys (1939-2012) died of oesophageal carcinoma. John wrote, for many years, a weekly column for "Shooting Times" and was a reasoned and powerful voice in Britain's shooting world. A conservationist, wildfowler and all-round shot he received numerous awards and prizes over his long career. A man of principle he had disagreement with BASC, which toward the end of his life was patched up.

His great double, "Roaring Emma" survives and will remain in use.

I never met him personally but feel that I knew him well from his wonderful column.

The shooting world has lost a great member.
