A remote-controlled aircraft owned by an animal rights group was reportedly shot down near Broxton Bridge Plantation Sunday near Ehrhardt, S.C.

Steve Hindi, president of SHARK (SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness), said his group was preparing to launch its Mikrokopter drone to video what he called a live pigeon shoot on Sunday when law enforcement officers and an attorney claiming to represent the privately-owned plantation near Ehrhardt tried to stop the aircraft from flying.

"It didn't work; what SHARK was doing was perfectly legal," Hindi said in a news release. "Once they knew nothing was going to stop us, the shooting stopped and the cars lined up to leave."

He said the animal rights group decided to send the drone up anyway.

"Seconds after it hit the air, numerous shots rang out," Hindi said in the release. "As an act of revenge for us shutting down the pigeon slaughter, they had shot down our copter."
He claimed the shooters were "in tree cover" and "fled the scene on small motorized vehicles."
"It is important to note how dangerous this was, as they were shooting toward and into a well-travelled highway," Hindi stated in the release. He said someone from SHARK called the Colleton County Sheriff's Department, which took a report of the incident.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Department filed a malicious damage to property incident report.

According to the report, Hindi told the responding deputy the group's remote-controlled aircraft "was hovering over U.S. 601 when he heard a shot come from the wood line. The shot sounded to him that it was of small caliber."

The incident report went on to state that "once shot, the helicopter lost lift and crash landed on the roadway of U.S. 601."

The deputy noted in the report that he was unable to speak to anyone at Broxton Bridge Plantation following the incident.
Hindi estimated damage to the drone at around $200 to $300.
Hindi said he will seek charges against those who shot down the drone.

"This was SHARK's first encounter with the Broxton Bridge Plantation, but it will certainly not be the last," Hindi said in the release. "We are already making plans for a considerably upscaled action in 2013."

Just goes to show how ignorent these types tend to be. Is there anyone on this forum who hasn't been "rained on" while in a duck blind? Not a pleasant experience but basically harmless.

Tell this jerk to go buzz the local nudist colony with his toy and camera and see if he has a right to fly that thing wherever he pleases. The club has every right to deny him trespass in the airspace above their property and where is the right to privacy so fondly referred to by the left. Doesn't his crashing the thing on a public road prove he is a hazard to the general public on the highway. Probably wasn't even shot at, just his effort to stir up a fuss.

Those who debate the "left versus right" part of the gun, animal rights and blood sports must understand that this is not about crime control or animal cruelty. It is about putting as deep a thorn as possible in the side of those on the opposite political side. If they were for real, they would be hassling the liberal judges and the chicken farmers. However, that would not drive the thorn into conservative opponents. They don't want us to enjoy our guns, and they want us to live side by side with criminals.

As a former active participant of flyer shoots I have to admit to myself, pigeon shooting is all but a thing of the past in the United States. I believe the animal rights folks are or have won. IMO these animal rights people are absolute lunatics in their fanaticism. They don't understand that pigeons are disease carrying pests (e.g., histoplasmosis). They are rats with wings and most urban areas will do all they can to eradicate these things, and yet the animal rights nutcases are winning their zealous battle to eradicate our sport. It makes little sense to me and is a sad state of affairs when one considers pigeon shooting is the origin of trapshooting (prior to advent of the inanimate target). It was a HUGE spectator sport in the late 1800's....and now look. Pigeon shooting is the Superbowl of shotgun sports and it is hard for me to watch it die.

I live pretty close to Hegins, many people have told me that their shoot would have died out 10 years earlier if it hadn't been for the bunny huggers making it such a spectacle.

Thank God all human suffering has ended, everyone is well fed, and there is no more crime so these people can move one and expend their energy to rid the world of this last injustice.

Twenty plus years ago I use to trap flying rats in a downtown area for shoots and retriever training. When it became "public" knowledge I was asked to stop by town officials. Even though is was on a private roof top area they were afraid of the up roar it could cause. I lost a easy source of 500-600 birds a year.

You would think that without trapping the population would have exploded. They are almost completely gone today. Seems the town started feeding the flying rats Decon. Off they went to die in peace and the anti hunters knew that I had been stopped for good. More than one way to skin a cat or kill a flying rat.

I shoot flyers at Broxton Bridge occasionally, as it is within one hour of my farm. I had friends over there last weekend, and this did occur. The shooting down of the drone was intentional, and well within the rights of the landowner. A couple of years ago we were harassed there by a helicopter carrying a cameraman leaning out the side trying to film the shooting. One call from the owner got the chopper grounded, with a reprimand.

The activists had vehicles alongside the highway, at the entrance to Broxton Bridge, filming the vehicles going in and out, with special attention to their tag numbers. They wanted a confrontation, and they got one.

Pigeon shooting is not a thing of the past, and giving in to them (the animal rights activists) is not the thing to do. The spokesman for SHARK may think that his people broke up the pigeon shoot last weekend, but he's badly mistaken. It went on all three days, as planned. And if he thinks this kind of activism will stop them in the future, he has a mistaken view of the Varn family at Broxton Bridge.
