I recently purchased a Westley Richards Droplock SxS, Serial # 17705 - made in 1919. It's a nice little gun and I'm trying to gather more info - what grade or level gun it is; possible value. It's not a best gun, but it's pretty good - the stock is a bit worn. Below are some pics of it - I'll get some fuller pics of the gun this weekend.
Thanks for any help.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Mike,

I haven't measured the barrel walls, but my gun dealer is very cautious with what he sells. I've put about 8 boxes of shells through it at the skeet ranges and it shoots nice.

Thanks

I've gone to the WR website and typed in the serial number, which is how I got that it was made in 1919, and I've been reading up on the company and its guns - just trying to learn more about the various levels of guns and maybe more about my gun w/o spending the $95 for the gun history from WR.

Let me get this straight... you have the means to buy a Westley droplock, but somehow find yourself strapped to pay $95 for it's history?

In that case, you might consider selling it for a Parker. Their factory letters are only $50.

Or a Winchester Model 12. Their letters are cheaper still.

Kensal,

Good point - I should probably get the factory history. I'm just a cheap skate by nature. I love the gun and will hang on to it as long as I can.

I WOULD like to get a parker - and lefever and AH Fox, etc, but can't get them in Japan - I just happen to run across this one and got lucky.

I thought the Westley Richards hand detachable lock guns were always considered a best gun?? I certainly would like to own one, esp in 20 bore! Fork out the C-note for the provenance on your gun is my humble opinion. It will be a plus if you decide to sell. And, you might want to invest in their new book. I would if I owned that gun.

Buzz is more of a gentleman than I've been. I apologize for my cynical stance. The last Westely 20-bore I owned was originally ordered by Lord Alfred Douglas, son of the Marqee of Queensbury.
Often the history of the gun is more fun than the gun itself. Almost.
