I wonder what would happen if the Supremes were to reverse their interpretation of the 2nd amendment. Is that even possible? Imagine for a moment that the court decides that private gun ownership will be left to the whims of local governments....I would not want to be a leo trying to enforce a ban in most parts of the US.

After all these years and all the money wasted, finally its over! My hats off to you and my many Canadian friends who worked so hard to get this travisty repealed. Unfortunately, one of my good friends didn't live long enough to see this happen, passing away a few weeks ago. Its too bad those that registered their guns can't get all their money back. I'm happy for you on the Northern boarder. Chris

The most direct answer I can give is that we're all a mass of contradictions. I don't think a person can be labelled by the church they go to, organizations they belong to, parties they vote for. I believe this applies equally to Americans and Canadians. I conditionally approve of abortion, am against capital punishment for starters. I wouldn't invite any of the GOP candidates to dinner except that wonderful whacky man of character Ron Paul. The only person I always wanted to meet is Muhammed Ali. I've been voting lately for the left-of-centre New Democratic Party and help the Conservative MP in my constituency and will do what I can to make him prime minister. I have never voted Liberal, period. When I look for assistance on social and natural resource management issues I don't want to be seen as anything other than what I am: willing to wash their feet if they'll work with me in the muck to get the job done while others soar like cherubs on silver wings in the heavens.

I want to be happy about King's announcement, but the fact is, I like the long gun registry. Let me explain before I incur the wrath of the usual suspects:
I went to the trouble of taking the Canadian test for acquiring a Possession and Acquisition Licence and then registered all the guns I might want to bring along on my Fall waterfowl/prairie gamebird trips to Saskatchewan. The long gun registration is rediculously easy and a marvel of bureaucratic efficiency.
Everyone else on my arrival plane has to present their temporary registration papers and hand over the %50 bucks while their gun is flyspecked by customs personnel to make sure there's no error in the serial number or something like that. Meanwhile, I present my P.A.L. and permanent registration card and walk right through with everyone thinking I must be some sort of VIP.
With the abolition of the long gun registry I'll be in line with all the other arriving hunters and get stuck with the fee/tax for bringing a gun into the Country. I'm thrilled to hear that common sense prevailed in Canada and that a foolish restraint on gun owners has been done away with, but I hope all the guys here in the USA understand that the time they took to get their PALs and register their guns is now about to be a waste....Geo

RHD45... As a lawyer I can assure you that YES, the Supreme Court can reverse any of its prior decisons any time 5 of the 9 current members vote to do so. The existence of our Second Amendment is literally hanging by a 1 vote thread.
King Brown... I live just 20 miles from our mutual border. Congratulations to you and your countrymen. It is virtually impossible to get a freedom back once it has been taken away, so your collective accomplishment is remarkable indeed. Any chance that they will also relax the long gun registration/permit requirements for the US citizens coming into Canada to hunt? I suspect that I am hoping for too much, but it can't hurt to ask.

King -
wonderful news. Congratulations.
Being a mass of contradictory politics myself, I can never quite understand the usual liberal hatred/fear of guns. I would guess a combination of unfamiliarity (as most are urban), just going along with the herd, and the dumb fallacy of preferring to blame inanimate objects rather than holding people responsible for their behavior.

I don't think the PALs went / will go out the window, we will still require them to buy and own firearms and no doubt having one will "ease" the entrance, with firearms, into Ca. Also, it will be a more gunowner / seller self applied registry - in other words you better know where that gun you just sold went to, especially the ones pre-registered (records destroyed?????). Remeber since about 1974? all firearm sales have been kept track of at the retailers . JMHO --- John Can.

LOL George. I'm glad that it worked well for someone. Actually I have read posts from you before describing how you were using the registry to ease your travel into Canada. I always thought how smart of you to see that advantage for an American coming to Canada.
As far as efficiency goes, well it might have been efficient for you but after 2 billion dollars, not so much for the Canadian taxpayer. Hope it's demise doesn't inhibit you returning.

Great news for common sense. A shotgun registry was brought into being here in Britain requiring all shotguns to be recorded by serial number on a person's certificate and all transactions to be notified. This was brought in despite the expensive failures of the Canadian model. Well it was brought in by the Blair Government who were very anti fieldsports in the main. It has proved to be expensive and time consuming for everyone involved and I can't think of a single example of how a crime has either been detected or prevented by its exsistance. It would be great if our current Government looked at it and learned a few lessons. A freedom lost is usually a freedom lost forever as few have the guts to change it just on the off chance there may be one single incident for which they would then be critisised. Lagopus.....
