Plumber,
The name Barlow is to be found in the records of trades men working in Birmingham Gun Quarter. There is record of an Edward Barlow in London circa 1848! When I see; London fine damascus on the rib of a gun, more often than not it is a low grade Birmingham gun or a gun of Belgian origin!
The only James Barlow that I can locate was based in Litchfield,Staffordshire between 1841 & 1834.Litchfield is an ancient city located approx;10 miles north of Birmingham. It likely that there was a family connection between James and the Birmingham gunmakers named Barlow.
If your gun was from Litchfield or London circa 1841-1848 it would be a muzzle loader. Please provide pictures of the gun including the proof marks we should then be able to clarify its origin.
