A bit off topic but there was a great "best of" episode a few years back on PBS' "The Antiques Roadshow". (search for it, you may find it on Youtube, it might have been a montage about forgeries) There was this elderly jackass cowboy know-it-all on the show telling the very credible younger guy that specializes in Wild West and Civil War stuff all about his Colt Dragoon / Patterson / Army / Navy collection.

PBS lets this blowhard amateur collector talk and talk and talk about his guns that he literally knew everything about. He was quoting value, rarity, condition, auction estimates, literally leaving the actual appraiser with nothing to comment upon as this cowboy goes on and on about his amazing collection. He explains how he paid $5000 for this, $10,000 for that and then boasts on how he got great deals on every gun.

At the end, the appraiser final gets to speak then says something that approximates "you sir, have the largest collection of Colt forgeries ever conceived. Every single one of the guns here you showed me today is a reproduction or forgery. The total value of the collection is approximately $500. Thanks for coming to the roadshow."

It was a beautiful TV moment as they cut to commercial as the owner is railing "I disagree", "These are all real, real I tell ya, real!". It was pure bliss for me to watch.

The was an auction show about RIA on TV a month or so ago, they were consigned a "1 of 100" or some such, Winchester levergun. IIRC, it had been in the family 70 years, photographed for a book, etc.

RIA vetted it carefully as it was expected to bring several hundred thousand dollars. Just before they went to press with the auction catalog, it was found to be a fake. Ouch

For Sauerfan:

I suspect that he sourced the gun firstly from Bonehills and had it finished. I wonder if it was for the foreign market as it was also fitted with sling swivel points which are rarely found on English guns. None the less it was a decent gun so why he felt a need to suggest it was a Greener I have no idea. The W.J.Greenen was in Gothic script on the top rib. An odd piece in all aspects. Lagopus.....

Wow - looks like RIA is starting to fly straight-er.

Wonder if this had anything to do with it:

Oh the things we don't know we don't know. A story I heard about someone TIG welding over the "sleeved" mark on a barrel flat. All polished up and no one's the wiser. CAVEAT EMPTOR {sic}

I have a friend that showed me his has a lunch box Purdey assuming someone made it during their lunch at Purdey.After reading what Martin posted I'll bet it was made in Liege.I would love to check it out again but this guy is too slick for that and he would be highly insulted because he knows he got scammed. Funny

A local guntrader duck guide... had a civil war sword he purchased for resale took it to a civil war expert that noticed it a forgery right off. He thanked the guy and said do not mention to anyone about it. Happens everyday

I have seen guns have their name struck off and replaced with a more fashionable one to up the price.

Chamber sleeving from 16-bore to 20-bore or 20-bore to 28-bore is a common practice and not forgery if declared.

I have come across the odd fake 'Purdey' at auction. Got no thanks for pointing one out!

When I was running AGL, an American dealer asked me to sleeve a gun invisibly than remove the 'sleeved' stamp. I refused and he cancelled the work order. Of course, it was just for the look, he wasn't tryig to fool anyone you understand wink
