Picked up a 12 ga 30 inch Clabrough & Johnstone, Makers, London & Birmingham sxs hammer gun, serial 3962, marked 2 3/4 on the fore-end lug. BP proofs after 1905.
Anyone tell me who actually built it, and approximate DOM??

Typical lower end Birmingham Hammer gun . Black powder ,Look like steel barrels but can't really tell from the photos. Has it been restored? From the look of the checkering I would say so. Black powder hammer guns were made in Brum well into the 20th C for the export market .As to who actually made it is a matter of guesswork ,and unless you have access to Claybrough's records I doubt you will ever find out.

Someone restocked it and I'd bet they blued over the damascus barrels.

As cheaply made as it appears there is no way I would shoot modern ammo in that gun.

I picked up a J.P. Clabrough 12 bore a while back. The only others I have seen were a few hammer guns. I like this one though. It is a Birmingham box lock ejector with assisted opening. The barrels are damascus and it is nitro proofed. It has a Greener cross bolt. Just under 6 3/4 lbs. Nice but not extensive engraving. The serial number is 10,283. The rib inscription is J.P. Clabrough & Bros., Makers, Birmingham. Would anyone know the date of manufacture for this one? I haven't any pictures yet, but did they have a preferred maker for their assisted opening box locks? Thanks in advance.
