I have an early Lefever in which the stock head is oil soaked. The stock looked black from the stock head back to the end of the grip cap, turns out there was a crack in the head as well. I just finished soaking the stock in acetone for a week, flipping it over every 8-12 hours. Some of the black has lifted but the wood is still pretty dark compared to the rest of the butt. Do you think I should give it more of an acetone soak? I have not used the denatured alcohol yet. What does the denatured alcohol soak do? I thought the acetone is what removes the oil.

Soak it in Lacquer thinner, requires a weight in the bath......

Soak 24 hours...leave at room temp. as more oil bleeds out, then re-soak for a few hours, then repeat the process......

For heavy oil contamination: If you live in a sunny climate, rotating in the sun helps the old oil migrate to the surface, if not your climate use a heat lamp.......soak and repeat this process as the oil continues to surface.....

Best,

Doug

Oil has limited solubility in acetone or alcohol compared to say, toluene or xylene. Even MEK is superior to acetone for virtually any gunshop application.

You're likely dealing with dirt and oxidation. I've had great success with a quick brush on of Sodium percarbonate disolved in water, 1 min or so dwell, then rinse with DI or Distilled water. I find that this often restores the color to a very slightly more yellow version of what it would have been originally based on new wood I've used. The sodium Percarbonate is the active ingredient in oxi-clean which is about 70% filler.

Gentlemen,

Thank you for the replies. I wanted to make sure I got all of the oil out before I tried fixing (accraglassing) the crack and refinishing the stock.
