Need some guidance! You guys have been great in the past so here goes.

A couple of days age while browsing through the shelves of a local shop I stumbled upon a WW Greener SxS 10 gauge hammer gun labeled "The Club Gun" on the rib. Serial number 251XX. It's complete, unct barrels, no major pitting, no badly buggered screws, a tiny bit loose on face (vertical not side to side)and the top lever is also a tiny bit left of center. The wood has really good figure with no chips or major scratches. Metal work has a tiny bit of very fine rust here and there. Horn butt plate and forend tip are present.

My questions are;
1. About when was it made?
2. Where does it fit in the Greener lineup of that era?
3. Where can I learn more about it?
4. About what is it worth?

As you can probably tell, I'm not a collector but a hunter and shooter that likes good stuff. I use mostly older SxS's to hunt with but I don't have a 10 gauge or a hammer gun. I know there are thousands of old, undesirable hammer guns out there but I rarely see any this nice. This thing is just screaming at me to give it a good home and the care it deserves. My problem is that I know very little about it. Hopefully you guys can help shed a little light on the subject.

Thanks again,
TomR

Tom...how much are they asking?...that would put some perspective on an unseen gun.
Pictures would help as to where it fell in quality.
I have a Hammer pigeon gun in the high 50,000s, made in 1901 with steel bbls...yours are damascus??? would guess around 1885/90 for yours
Greener made lovely stuff, love his hammerguns.
A price n some pics would help with an opinion
If its REAL cheap, perhaps just buy it??
Post some pics mate
good luck
franc
I do have the Greener book, but can't find it....I'll look up the Club Gun when i find it smile

Tom,

According to Graham Greener's book "The Greener Story" the gun would appear to have been made in 1882.

You could try contacting Mr. Greener for more information:

Once again this board got me on the right track. Thanks

Per your suggestions I contacted Mr. Greener and he was able to answer some of my questions. The gun was made in 1880 for export to the US to meet the rising need of the trap and clay target shooters of the era.

The best advise I got however was that if it was cheap enough to just buy it. $250 certainly was inexpensive to my untraineed eye so I bought it. Never have found out what its market value is.

It's cleaning up really well. A small shim has tightened up the action. The barrels should polish out pretty well and I can get appropriate shells from RST.

Weighs a tad over 8 pounds, barrels are 30". I haven't measured the chokes yet buy I can detect them when cleaning the tubes.

Hammers, 10 gauge, impractical as hell but I think it just may end up joining me turkey hunting next spring.

Thanks again,
TomR

More than you paid. That's what the market value is. How much more is a different question, but that doesn't matter right now.

Because you surely got yourself about the classiest turkey gun Pennsylvania's seen in many, many years. (Beats the hell out of using one of Mossberg's "Turkey Thug" (TM) model 500 variants. Less expensive than the Mossy, too.)
