I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this gun and what I've done to it so far. Its been on the back burner for about five years but Glenn Fewless rematted the rib for me so I ran out of excuses on why I wasn't working on the gun. He did a wonderful job BTW!
I had a really nice piece of California english picked out for this gun but somehow it just didn't seem right so I bought this piece of walnut that came from one of the "stans", I really don't remember which one. Somehow it just seems more appropriate to this gun. These pictures were taken outside today so this is the color of the wood with no stain at all.
When I did the original shaping of the side plate panels I carved drop points at the rear. They looked ok but I hated them so off they went. There are no existing records to say whether this gun had drop points or not (some did and some didn't) so I made it to please me.
I've installed hand made heel & toe plates made from horn and I also made an original style grip cap from horn. If I had to pay for this grip cap in all probability it would be the most expensive grip cap in history and it's not even finished yet!
Once the stock work is finished I'll have the engraving recut, put some hair back on the dogs and have the action recased. The barrels will also be refinished in B&W.
The final part of the process will be to have the barrels "lined" so I can really use the gun.
