And a spring as such can not be welded.

I hate to disillusion certain individuals, but I've had more than a few double gun leaf springs welded, and they're doing just fine. The trick is to have the job done correctly, with masterful heat control. This is generally not a skill acquired by the average industrial welder. So... the issue resolves to "no" for the most part, but "yes" for the supreme expert welder.

From jOe's standpoint he is correct, but should have stated what has to be done, the same as what you should have stated also.

Very little to do with "the supreme expert welder", more to the expert person that knows steel and what spring steel should be hardened to and annealed.
You cannot weld to hardened steel.

I just had a mainspring for a sharps and hankins welded. They had to weld a small plate over the break but it works just fine.

I'm not claiming to know anything....just passing on what two true experts told me.

I had a main spring break over two years ago and had it TIG welded just to get me by to finish the week end, I have a new one I carry with me but want to see how long this one will last. I have shot at least 2000 rounds thru that side lock and it is still going. : Mike

On the topic of welding...I dont know but just wonder...would the heat not change the properties/strength of the metal? I would go along with the weld like someone mentioned, to get by till I could get a new one made, options for a new spring have been mentioned here...why would someone not choose to get a new one?
