On the last station yesterday while shooting sporting clays the top lever spring on my shotgun broke. It is a W.J. Jeffery boxlock 20 bore that dates to 1901.

I took it a part this afternoon and found this.

It is 1.120" long and .185" wide, the "tit" sticking up is .050" tall and .032" in dia.

Brownells sells an kit with 5 different springs for $75
http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/pid=10070/product/SHOTGUN_TOP_LEVER_KIT

Would anyone happen to have bought this kit and have one of similar dimensions they would sell? If I have to buy the whole kit fine, I just thought someone here might have been in my situation sometime and have the extras lying around. Or maybe there is another source for a spring I should check out?

TIA Sam

Its suprissing how many guns an AyA lever spring can be made to fit. These are readily available in the UK so I geuss they will be in the States. They will be needed to be filed up and you may have to redrill the peg hole but if all else fails its a possibility.

1. Will Brownells tell you?

2. If you like the gun, I wouldn't mess with the peg hole but I would have a competent 'smith make you a new spring that fits or grind and polish one to make it fit.

Hugh Lomas did one for me last year. I think it ended up costing around $200 once you include the shipping on the gun, time to take the gun down, fabricate/file a new spring and re-install.

Sam:

I had a similar problem a few moths ago with a broken main v spring.
I bought from Numrich arms a V spring that costs me only $7.50 (plus shiping).
The spring required a lot of file and snadpaper work to fit, but it is working great.
I do not bought the spring from a catalog; a nice person was in comunication with me via e-mail. Send photos and dimensions and the guy search for the part. He told me that they have hundreds of v springs, perhaps not new because they have some rust, but you can save lots of money.
If you have the time and certain hand ability you can do it cheap this way!!!

Best,

There is another option. Weld it back. If done by an EXPERT TIG welder, it will be fine. Your break is in a low-flex area of the spring, and that helps a lot. If you PM me I can recommend such a TIG Master in OH who will probably get you back in action for under a Fiver. All through the post.

It looks very simular to the lever spring in my model 1900 Remington. I bought mine at www.wisnersinc.com

Shame it is just past the 100 year warranty period. I would try to have it welded first. You could always have one made later if it fails again.
