Hi,

I recently purchased this old greener hammer gun in only fair condition.

My plan is to machine two tubes that will extend 20 inches down the barrels that are chambered in 45/70.
I will remodel the extractor plate to work on these barrels.

I am planning to load black powder with conservative loads. I am only considering smooth bores at this stage, and cast lead projectiles.

I am not relying on the integrity of the barrels at all, just using them to hold the tubes.

Anyone tried anything like this? I dont know if its realistic, but the gun cost me very little, and I can get the machining sorted cheaply.

This is the canvas:

Yes, I have done it.

If you can do the work yourself, fine. Otherwise you are better off looking for a double already built.

Why not rifled 12 ga. barrels and use something like the Hornady sabot loads? Better stopper than the 45-70 1600 fps load and accurate at greater ranges.

I have acquired two 7x30 waters barrels that are new old stock, that were destined for a model 94 and never made it.
@$135 each they were a much more economical option for me. It also gives me allot more meat around the breech than a 45/70. Now I just need to see if the greener I have lined up is good enough to use for the double rifle.

Hi Mate, To get a 12g chamber I would need new shotgun barrels. That would blow out my costs I think. I am however a fan of slugs.

Wasn't there a guy in Alaska who had a business wherein you could order rifled tubes for smoothbore barrels, chambered in a few different calibres, .45/70 being one of them?

I'm going back about 5 - 6 years now. For some reason I want to say the co. name was a short word starting with A.

Anybody else recollect this?

Lads,
How do these insets work?
I guess my main Q would be how well the rifled insert would fit in
the bbl , different shotgun chambers & bores not usually being exactly the same?
I can see getting a couple for my sxs, & either they won't slide in, or they are a sloppy fit?
Anyone have any experience or thoughts?
And how do you know what caliber is safe on what action?
Might be great for a Single bbl break open gun though...no regulation
Thanks
Franc

If I remember correctly these inserts were designed to not use the shotguns extractors. The maker claimed there was a safety issue with machining the slots so the extractors would function. So you were left with prying the empties outwith a knife or using a rod to push them out. At that point I lost all interest.

Might be also great for making a "cape gun".

With kind regards,
