I just wandered over to Maurice Hallowell's fine site and almost passed out. You might want to look at the photos of the John Oberlies .22 highwall fully engraved by Kornbrath, it is a wonder of gun art.

To each his own. I find that engraving hard on the eyes. Just not my style I guess.

Probably why Kornbrath never amounted to anything.

Engraving is art and subjective.

"Eight Elvises" by Andy Warhol sold for what, a $100 million? Not to mention the soup cans ;-).

There is something out there for everyone's taste, in art or engraving.

Superb engraving, splendid rifle building, unexpectedly inappropriate chambering, totally amateurish buttplate treatment. Too bad.
Regards, Joe

The charm of the piece is the fact that it IS a .22 IMHO.

The charm of the piece is the fact that it IS a .22 IMHO.

But what would any owner ever actually USE it for? I frequently take my guns into the field, all of them including (actually ESPECIALLY) the fancy engraved ones, and IMO any of them should be capable of being a joy to use appropriately as well as a joy to behold at leisure. Just part of the charm of the genre I guess, to have utility as well as aesthetics!

It might be different if my rifles were on display as a part of the house decor or even the shop decor, but I keep 'em mostly locked in the safe when not actually in use.

But it IS certainly unusual! Too bad about the buttplate.
Regards, Joe

Mr. Oberlies had several clients who ordered guns as the previous gun was delivered. Some of his buyers had vivid imaginations and ordered really odd combinations. Many of these guns, as suggested, never went outdoors. A couple of these prolific clients were serious hunters who did use their Oberlies guns, but not all of them. Oberlies guns from the thirties are often found in nearly mint condition.
