I recently bought some vintage rifle ammo and before I closed the deal I asked the seller if he had anything else "interesting". He had 47 vintage roll crimped paper Crown/Dominion 10 gauge Black Powder Shells loaded with #6 shot that I got a great deal on. I was pretty confident that the powder was viable but had concerns about the old style primers. I took the W&C Scott out to give em a go and boy did they belch smoke! Most fun in a long time.

My questions now are: Can these be reloaded? and: Are these too collectible to use up given that I have other sources for shootable ammo?

If you can get some birds with them, and goog memories of the days you got the birds with them then using them would not be wasting them in the least.

By the way, lovely Scott, from what I can see.

They are loadable provided the hulls aren't separating from base, the base wad hasn't been shot out or tilted, the primer pockets are of a size to take current primers. I wouldn't shoot them out though. Just get modern hulls and reload from there.

They look like large rifle primers. Are they the same?

If you reload those hulls, dip the ends in hot wax and "roll" the crimp area with your finger, or a dowel before the wax hardens so that this portion of the paper case will again be crisp; this step will make for a much cleaner/tighter roll crimp.

The primers used in early U.S. made shotshells were number 2 and 3. Our number 2 was also used for revolver cartridges. Maybe the Canadians used the same, or equivilent.

Thank you for posting these pictures. Made me think of the time when Dad let me use old Gradnpa's gun (it wasn't as nice as the one on the picture, of course) but didn't let me touch the "good" ammo. I had to get by with bits and scrapes that accumulated in Grandpa's closet over the years, reloading paper shells for 3rd and 4th time - a good madicine to turn a 17yo's mind from sex&durgs wink ... rock'n'roll is another matter, without some Beatles in the background the job of gluing together the layers of the hull would be...

...sorry, got carried away. Back to the topic, did the shells come in boxes of 25? If yes, you can keep one box intact for collectible reasons, and shoot-reload-shootagain the rest smile It's fun smile

One moth/bug eaten box, barely together with lots of damage. I'm surprised the shells were in as god a condition that they are.

Well, I found these same shells for a starting bid of $24.99 each on a certain web based auction site so I think I might just have to hang on to them, even if they are only worth half that amount. Mine are even in better condition!

Twenty five bucks a shell? Or twenty five bucks a box? What is that website?
