Just wondering why I see little if any discussion of the Winchester 21 on this forum?? I know that it is an expensive gun, but it seems that many of the SxS discussed on this forum are equally expensive. I would think the Winchester 21 would get more coverage?

Seems that the Win21 has a well established reputation, they are few in the market, thus there is rather few people to talk about them, and they seem to last for ever. Last but not least, Galazan has taken due care of the trade name and image. My Win21 16 Ga. has needed very little gunsmithing and after stock bending it shoots fantastically, it leaves nothing to desire.

There is quite a bit of Model 21 discussion here, and elsewhere, from time to time.
There are those of use that love them and there are others who hate them.

ejsxs, I have only high praise for my 16 gauge, straight grip Skeet Grade.

I have been looking for a 21 for 5 years locally that I could afford. Tuesday I received a call that a local shop just got one in. I can hardly wait to pick it up on the 12th. Anyone recognize whom the engraver might have been? Dove season opens in 3 weeks and look forward to shooting it. Now I now why all the fuss over the 21's. Can someone recommend a good book on the 21 ?

The gun was presented to Hughsten M McBrain on his 25th anniversry by his associates at Marshall Fields and Co. 10/09/1947 per an emblem on the grip cap.

Very interesting engraving. Do you have any closeup pictures of engraving and wood? Does not look like Win factory engraving but have you queried Cody for information on original gun? Marshall Field's did sell high grade shotguns including Purdey's, do you know what the function of McBrain was at field's?-Dick

When I opened this thread, I said "A Griebel engraved 21".

I have no idea how much that first impression is worth, but it still looks like his work to me. It would not have been signed at that date, unfortunately. He was in Chicago. I had him do two rifles in the early 1960s, very late in his career/life.

I think the root of it is that they are a pretty well known (and already discussed) gun. Maybe pricey enough to push them out of the mainstream. They are old enough to have an air of nostalgia about them, but not a lot of history in the sense that Doc Carver, Prince Edward, and TR shot one

Wonder if Klunk would have liked that one?

On second thought, I guess I know what he would have said....

Best,
Ted
