Hi Ken -

Thank you so much for your expertise/advice regarding this bespoke fowling piece! One more question - is it safe for modern loads?

Joey,

No gun made in 1910 was designed for modern SAAMI-spec loads. You aren't going to blow the thing up (Prussian Dalys are strong guns), but by shooting modern loads in the gun of this vintage you would subjecting the gun to stresses beyond which it was designed which is never a good idea. It is not good for the gun and there is no reason to do it.

The good news is that appropriate pressure rounds are easily obtained from RST, Gamebore, Eley, and several others. While these will sell at a small premium as compared to the stcok down at the local Gander Mountain, this is not a big deal. The extra $25 for a flat of shells doesn't mean much when you have dropped several grand on a beautiful vintage piece. Theses loads will also kill any bird that has ever flown or any clay ever thrown.

Good luck,
Ken

Hi Ken - spot on with the ammo info.

I have the RST site open and see their "low presssure and light recoiling" "Lite" loads recommended for "old side-by-sides" designed to be "gentler" on "Best Grade" shotguns. I'm looking at their 16 bore 2 1/2" shells with 1 oz. listed with 1200 fps. However, the Fiocchi Game/Target 16GT, 16 Gauge, 2 3/4", 1 oz. is only 1165 fps. That should also work right?

Many thanks,

Joey

Velocity does not parallel with pressure. RST will give you pressure figures over the phone for individual loads. They are quite low. Other companies pressure figures will vary and are not neccesarily on the low side.

I bought a flat of the RST 16ga "Lite" 7/8 oz loads. They are indeed light, and break targets very nicely. Expect they'd also be a good choice on smaller birds, like quail or woodcock and grouse.

Thanks. Looks like I'll be using their shells going forward.

Alex from RST sent me this;

16 Ga. 2 1/2" Lite 1oz. # 5,6,7,7 1/2,8,9 - Vel. 1200 / PSI. 6800

16 Ga. 2 1/2" Lite 7/8oz. " " - Vel. 1125 / PSI 5800

I personally use these in 100 + yrs. Parker's

Thank you for your interest.

Joey, your post has made little sense to me. You may wish to use the search function and read a great deal more.

Out there doing it best I can.

Hi Ken -

I bought the gun three weeks ago. Thank you again for your help on the purchase. It was your advice that sold me on this superb Charles Daly SxS. I also called the Orvis gunsmith that worked on my Arrieta - he viewed it online and said he'd never seen one with that much engraving - he was very impressed. Unfortunately, the dealer wouldn’t budge on the price but their gunsmith polished the bores and threw in snap caps no charge. I’m certain the gun will appreciate in value substantially by the time I’m too old to use it anyway. I've been at the skeet range several times and love the gun. I'm using the RST lite shells you recommended. It points perfectly for me and is a thrill to shoot. I can't wait to use it on grouse in Canada this fall.

Take care,

Joey
