I recently examined a striking looking Weatherby Regency O/U. This is the older Italian-made model with fixed chokes. I think I have heard that these guns were made by Angelo Zoli. If this is correct, how is their quality? The gun looked nice, but I have heard that Angelo Zoli is not as good as Antonio Zoli, and that neither of course is as good as a Beretta. Is that a fair assessment?

If anybody has any experience with these guns, I would love to hear about it.

OK. Does anybody have any experience with or comments about the Weatherby Olympians?

Weatherby Olympians were built by Nikko, the same company that built the Winchester 101 and 96. The Olympian is a lightly engraved version of the Winchester 96, with much nicer wood. They seem to sell for $750 or less at most of the auction sites. I haven't used one, but they should be very reliable based on their Winchester heritage.

This link has some commentary and an exploded parts view.

My son has an Italian Weatherby. I believe it is an Athena and is a 20 ga.. He doesn't do a lot of high volume shooting but it has held up ok for upland hunting. He did have to have the ejectors repaired. It's an attractive gun with a highly figured stock and he shoots it very well. I've shot targets with it a couple of times and liked the way it handled except that the barrels are stacked the wrong way.(wink)

Oganza, thank you for the links. It looks like not many people have experience with the Regency because not many were made.

I did not have an Olympian model to examine, so I was surprised that it was a totally different gun. I had figured that the Regency was just a cosmetically upgraded version of the Olympian. I actually wish that was the case, because I once had a Nikko Golden Eagle which was a very nice gun.
