I participated in the Great Northeast SXS Classic at Hausman's Hidden Hollow this weekend. Once again, Ernie Hausman's family and crew put together a really first rate & fun shoot. Of the three big eastern shoots (including Vintagers & Southern), I think this one had the most challenging targets, as reflected in the scores posted. I saw about 80 shooting scores posted in the 12 gauge SXS category, and heard there were about 100 shooters total. There were more vendors and hundreds more guns in the tent this year, as Steve Barnett, Monty Whitley, Roger Bain and Gary Herman were among the new vendors this year. RST again provided ammunition for about any gun you could shoot. Shooting and door prizes were great, including several shotguns and a Galazan/CSMC RBL. Looking forward to going again next year.

The Lefever Arms Collectors Association would also like to express our thanks to Ernie Hausmann and his family for a well prepared and very enjoyable event, especially for our First "Uncle Dan Cup" shoot.

It was a very good course. We shot at Rock Mountain the day before, and it too was a great course.

One of the fun competitions they do at this shoot is set up an informal challenge among shooters of different American manufacturers. When you sign up for the main event, you can note the make of your gun on your scorecard. The top five scores (not required to shoot as a squad) for each American gunmaker are totaled and a winner determined. This year it went to the A.H. Fox shooters.

Not to throw a wrench into the works but maybe if the top five were taken from a culmination of the entire three days of the event we may see a shift in the results. A great many attendees come from great distances and leave for home on Sunday morning. This year the threat of heavy rains and high winds sent most people home early Sunday morning anyway. I went back to Hausman's on Sunday morning, not to shoot but to take care of a little business and there were only six vehicles in the parking field. How many shooters took part in Sunday's team competition and how many shot for each team? This isn't "sour grapes" but simply one guy's thoughts and questions.

Weather was definitely tough early Sunday, but sunny by noon, so there were a wide range of shooters. One of things I find particulary interesting about the course at Hausman's is that its primarily a wooded course and the targets are presented more as "hunter" targets than traditional sporting targets. Compared to the Vintagers (Pintail Point) or the Southern (Deep River) venues, most of the targets require shooting through or around thick cover and trees and the light can be tricky. In that sense, it does a great job of replicating hunting grouse or woodcock. Each of the venues has its pluses, but this is the aspect of Hausman's Hidden Hollow I think is the most fun (unless you're a tree, of course!)
