Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht!
Alles schläft; einsam wacht

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm, all is bright

Oíche Chiúin, oíche Mhic Dé,
Cách ‘na suan, dís araon,

Almost Two Hundred years ago the carol "Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht" was heard for the first time in a village church, Nicola-Kirche (Church of St. Nicholas) in Oberndorf, Austria. The congregation at that Midnight Mass in St. Nicholas Church listened as the voices of the assistant pastor, Fr. Joseph Mohr, and the choir director, Franz Xaver Gruber, rang through the church to the accompaniment of Fr. Mohr's guitar. On each of the six verses, the choir repeated the last two lines in four-part harmony.

On that Christmas Eve, a song was born that would wing its way into the hearts of people throughout the world.
The German words for the original six stanzas of the carol we know as "Silent Night" were written by Joseph Mohr in 1816, when he was a young priest assigned to a pilgrimage church in Mariapfarr, Austria.

For a well done, distinctive perspective of a 2,000 year old story spend a few pleasurable minutes and view the link below.

Bird Dog- Thanks for sharing this history with us. You're correct. This is possibly the most beautiful of all the Christmas carols-certainly the most meaningful.

And as Tim recounts, it was sung with a guitar, not an organ as one would expect!

Thanks for sharing.
