Hi all, just was wondering what you all think looks better on a vintage gun (no country in mind here) a thin butt plate or thin pad?

I'm just talking about looks not function.

Thanks so much!

Greg

I usually like a Silvers Pad more than a butt plate... but not always.

Butt plate every time, especially on a vintage gun.

Which gun are you going to amputate? I hope not the Atkin! My first choice is a checkered butt. Otherwise I prefer the looks of a leather covered pad, Greg.

Depends.
Some shotguns look more elegant (at least to me) with a carefully veined leather covered pad. Not a bulbous black knob on the end of the stock, but rather a pad that has been shaped and tapered with the leather thinned, so that it is a pleasant extension of the too short stock.
This one is tastefully done (to me.
Notice how it is the same size as the stock. All lines extend through the pad from the stock. It is not proud of the wood on any edge. I have held this one several times, but I can't make myself buy it. The top of the leather pad has a widows peak inset to the stock. It's very nice for 1890's work.

Out there doing it best I can.

Clapper- that's a wonderful pad indeed. I prefer a good looking leather-covered pad,if done nicely, or a Silvers pad, main reason is the gun will not slip over it you park it in a corner of the kitchen plus the butt will not slip on my shooting jacket as I mount the gun.

You think that leather is 120 years old?

I'll take a vintage monogrammed butt plate every time.
