I have a couple of the Chas. Daly (Zastava made) left hand Mauser actions. I'm thinking about whether one of these actions could be turned into a classic G&H styled 30-06 sporting rifle. They already come drilled & tapped for a receiver sight but of course on the mirror side to the holes on a right hand Mauser.

Here are a couple of questions I need to find answers to:

1. Is there a Lyman 48 variant that would fit a LH Mauser? If I'm not mistaken a sight for a Winchester fits on the left side of the receiver. Any idea whether this may fit on my LH Mauser?

2. Are there different model bases for Griffin and Howe side mounts? i.e. different models for Mausers, Winchesters Springfields etc?

3. Are these side mounts reversible? i.e. could I turn it around and mount it on the right side of my left hand Mauser?

Any help or insight anyone can provide would be most appreciated.

cheers,

You might try asking G&H directly, griffinhowe.com. They can still fit those sidemounts, very pricey.

Dear Stu C,

I did the following, I took the base for a Lyman 48 for a Mauser 98 and put it on a post 64 Model 70 there was a very good fit(want me to post a picture?), contourwise. So I think the converse would work, that a Lyman 48 for a Winchester would fit a Mauser. The only problem that could very well exist is that the position of the screw hole would force the sight to interfere with the bolt.

As far as G&H scope mounts are concerned, I can't speak for every base and mount but there is an amount of mirror symmetry. Within reason, I believe that you could rework a right-handed base and mount for an 03 Springfield or small ring Mauser to work for a left-handed large ring Mauser.

Stu,

I know of three receiver sights that can be installed on either the right or left sides of a receiver.

(1) The Vaver with a removable mounting block . You may have to make or modify the mounting block.

(2) The Neal also has a removable mounting block. The windage bar can be turned 180 for left or right side mounting.

(3) The Armstrong receiver sight. The apparatus on the windage bar can be switched from one side to the other allowing either right or left side mounting.

The Vaver receiver sight is the one most often seen on internet auctions. They seem to be popular with model 52 owners.

Have been looking for a Vaver for a Krag for years. They were cataloged but I have never seen a Krag with one.

I spoke with the gunsmithing dept. at G&H tonight. Looks like fitting the side mount to my LH receiver is quite possible. The gentleman I spoke with mentioned the many steps they take to fit the mount properly. Quite interesting, though I don't remember everything he detailed.

The price quoted for anyone interested was $450 for the mount and $250 for fitting. I'm still thinking whether I want to take this route.

Thanks again,

Dear Stu C,

That is a lot of money, but I bet we can come up with ways of doing it cheaper, lets start by getting more information,
are you? or do you have friends that are machinists?
