I picked up a 10 gauge Remington Model 1878 Whitmore lifter for a reasonable price, considering condition. I believe it is called a Heavy Duck Gun and it is pretty massive. It has been cut to 20", so I thought it might make a neat and occassional Cowboy Action gun - maybe a final stage closer for effect. Wood could use an overall cleaning and refinishing. Perhaps a good winter project. It has steel barrels, tight lockup and bores with some light to moderate pitting. The most egregious cosmetic problem is that it has areas of rather deep pitting on the outside of the barrels beginning about 1.5" forward of the forend. The steel in the breech area is very thick and I wonder about shooting this with light to moderate black powder shells. I purchased some shells for another 10 gauge that are loaded with 100 gr FFG and 1.25 oz 7.5 shot. Any thoughtful thoughts on shooting this? Can the exterior pitting be polished down without affecting strength of barrels?
(Sorry for earlier typo that had 1.75 oz shot! Brain fart.)

Downbore pressures are substantially lower than breech pressures. Somewhere I have a copy of the famous DuPont pressure curve which shows that barrel pressures at 14" are about 500 psi and rapidly falling.

A barrel would have to be thin indeed to have problems with such pressures.

Someone else may have the pressure chart, or i can dig around and find it.

My take- if the barrel is otherwise sound, and you still have more than 10 thou thickness after striking the pits- go for it.

Remember, of course, that blackpowder pressures are EXACTLY like smokeless powder pressures. The barrel doesnt care how the pressure is achieved.

Regards

GKT
