I have several old leather double cases, mutton and solid, and some shooting bags that need some help. What is the best thing to use to clean and protect these things? Thanks, Jake

Coach Leather shops sell a conditioner and a leather cream that wroks well. Saddle shops also sell various leather conditioners.

I use Lexol, both cleaner and conditioner for my leather stuff. Has done a good job over the years.

From my shoemaker, something called "Leather Renew, conditions and softens dry aged leathers." That's all there's on the 8fl.oz plastic bottle. Worked wonders for me.

Neats foot oil has been the traditional leather conditioner, ever since neats walked off the Ark. To clean and protect, saddle soap is probably as good as the modern miracle preparations and probably cheaper.

Lexol is some good stuff.
Common Neats foot oil 'can and will' darken leathers...Saddle Soap is good for cleaning but offers little in the way of protection.
I've also had good results with a product recomended by Russell Moccasin Co. called Obenaups, it comes in a liquid and a paste.

I have used Pecard Antique Leather Care on an old carriage clock case. It has apparently stopped the oxidation/deterioration of the leather, and strenghtened/stiffened the old leather. Check it out at http://www.antiquepecard.comRegards, Neil

A 3rd for Pecards. BTW, they tell me the leather dressing and the leather cream offer the same protection, the cream spreads easier and is absorbed faster than the dressing. The cream is easier to get into nooks and crannies. Think mayonnaise vs. peanut butter. I use both.

I have had good luck with older leather using Danner boot dressing. The hard part is maintaining the integritey of the stiching because of past abuse or neglect
