I have a drilling (16/9.3x72R) with maker's name O.G. Scherrell, Berlin. The serial number is clear and is stamped on the barrels, the action, and the forend metal. I'm assuming the picture below is a manufacture date. It is stamped both on the action and the barrels.

Is it likely that it was made in 1891 and Nitro proofed later? The barrels are also marked Fluss-Stahl, Krupp-Essen if that is a help.

Thanks!

No. 691 is an assembly number. The "mm" stamp as well as the bullet type and weight and "Eagle Nitro" on the side of the tubes give it away and it was made 1912<year<1923. Can you get a pic of the marks below the 691 on the rifle tube? The Berlin cat O.G. Scherrell was just a firearms merchant.

Here are a few more pictures. It is a wonderful grouse gun and hope to take something with antlers with the rifle tube someday.

Correction, the "691" would be an assembly number. Odd paring of "L", "M", "1" and a script "H" or "K". Also the cartridge designation "9,3 X 72 Norm" arrived on the scene circa 1912 to bring together the D, E & Nimrod versions of the 9.3X72R. What type frame does it have, is it an underlever or toplever?

You are an incredible source of information, sir! It is an underlever, and the hammers are attached to the trigger plate. I'll take a better picture and post it later. Thanks.

GD Yankee(that term is used down here & I assume you know the definition):

As I've said before, many before me have provided very good sources, but thanks.

Regarding the "M", and somtimes seen "MM" stamps, I'm going to guess that it may have been for Max Metzner of Zella Saint Blasii while post WWI could be for Max Moller, a barrel maker of Zella-Mehlis. For now I'm not sure when Moller entered the scene but I can't locate him in the 1907 Zella Saint Blasii/Mehlis phone directory. He many not have had a phone.
