On my pinfire, 12 bore I use 72 grains of powder, I have been using this load for quite a while but found the gun not very good for hunting. I just got a Lefever back from a gunsmith and the barrels are excellent. I plan to load 85 grains with Bismuth to increase the speed of the shot. Any idea on how much 13 grains of powder will increase the speed of the shot?

I get grains and drams confused, my measure gives me the correct amount. I am not goood with terms...

When I loaded black powder I used the dram equilvant of my favorite load as a guideline. If your favorite load is 5 drams and 1.5 oz of shot think LIGHT not big. I would start at 2.5 drams and 1 oz of shot.

I second Bill's comments. My personal preference was to use 3f.

My measure is in grains, in the pinfire I used 2.5 drams or 72 grains.

A dram = 27.5 grains. 2.5 x 27.5 = 68.75grains. 3 x 27.5 = 82.5grains

As a 12 bore hunting and clay load I use 2 1/2 ddrams of fine grain powder, card and felt wadding and 1 ounce of shot. That seems to perform fine. Lagopus.....

I have loaded plastic cases, plastic wads with black. Works fine once but don't expect many reloads the biggest problem is volume. You can end up using a wad designed for 1.5 oz shot and barely having room for an oz of shot. About 100 years ago there was a wad called a "LAG Unwad" It was simply a cup with an insert in the cup that crushed to compensate for volume. Ideal for black and 2 inch shells but I have not seen any for years.

Yeah I know room will be an issue.A cowboy shooter recommended
50grn with 1oz,I would be shooting clays only.
Could I clip the section under the wad cup to make room?

I use plastic cases but always use card and felt for wadding. Platic wads have a nasty habit of starting to melt as they go up the bore causing an even bigger cleaning problem. With coarser grain black powder you will find that the case sometimes shows signs on melting with pin holes appearing in the case wall. Cases are best thrown away after one loading. Compression formed cases such as Winchester AA can be used but the internal volume is not as great as those using parallel tubes. Lagopus.....
