I am looking to purchase my first double. I likely want to look at Ithaca NID's.

How do I recognize a gun to be an NID and not a different Ithaca double.

Are any serial number ranges prefered for safety and reliabilty?

425000 and beyond. For a couple yrs. ('25-'26) had the cocking indicators (round pins) atop the action behind the breech balls. Later no indicators. Pretty hard to confuse them with a slab-sided Flusie, Crass, buttressed Lewis, etc.

PS: I like the mid-30s gun; comb a bit straighter. First double I owned was a '25 NID.

I think indicators lasted longer than the first two years; at least my Jan. 1930 gun has them.

I thought the indicators went away after two or three yrs. Didn't bother to look it up and most likely mistaken.

Did not see one NID, Lefever or Sterlingworth at today's show in Allentown PA

Forum members must be hoarding them!

Maybe a few.

I just bought my second NID 20. Its a '47 in near mint condition with 100% case colors and really nice wood - albeit on sided. Metal fit around the rib extension could have been better. I have one of the first version NIDs in the same configuration and quite high condition. I still need a "star grade" and the third one.I like them and they are quite a bit cheaper than the other "American classic" field grades.

Good luck with your search.

Bushmaster,
If you are going to be messing with Ithacas, you need to avail yourself to a copy of "The Ithaca Gun Co. from the Begining." There is a copy on E-bay at present.

Walter, A friend has a lovely NID handed down from is fater-in law. The gun is off face and needs to be made right.
Is this a difficult bit of work or rather straight forward. Would you be kind enough to reccomend someone to do the job.
Thanks
Justin
