What is the best paint or coating to use on a patterning plate to indicate pellet strikes. It must be something useable very quickly after it is applied, so as not to delay shooting. I've heard of using whitewash, or some mixtue with oil in it. I've seen a fairly oily gray mixture used at the Perazzi factory in Italy. Any suggestions from you gun-fitters out there? There must be a traditional method.

I'm not talking about using paper sheets to view distribution or pattern percentage counting.

I use a white latex based paint that dries up fast.

Cheap latex. You can pick up partial cans at your community hazardous materials collection and recycling point for little or nothing.

Three loooong pages of discussion on this same topic here just a few weeks back by going to:

Some like the grease, others the paint & oil mixture, others just ordinary paint. Pick one that sounds good to you.........and adjust from there.

A buddy of mine uses old crankcase oil, applied sparingly with a paint roller.

Whitewash, inexpensive, but you have to mix up a bit each time.

I use latex paint, any type but light colored, add a quart or more of motor oil to a gallon of paint, roll on with a paint roller. The oil keeps the paint from drying. To keep it going add a little more motor oil to the mix.
