I mistakenly posted this on another forum, but I am wondering who makes trap butt plates for sporting rifles? I had an Albright but they are no longer available. I believe someone said they might be made in Germany.

The last modern ones I have seen were made by Biesen(S)I don't know if they are still making them or not. Can you tell us what it's going on?

RHD45,

I haven't seen any trap batt plates advertised in awhile but NECG sells some nice grip cap traps and cartridge traps on their site at http://www.newenglandcustomgun.com/

My son wants one on a .22 sporter he is contemplating and we are getting the bits and pieces together. Will be either a M2 Springfield or a Marlin 39. he really likes the trap buttplates for a cleaning rod, having fallen and used the barrel to collect soil samples.

Folks,

I ran a quick Google search on "Al Biesen" and found his website. Apparently those beautifully made trap plates are still available:

Thanks, Greg. I sure wish I had bought a lot more of the Albright traps when they were available, the Beisens are ~ 4X higher! Of course that was 20 years ago....

I didn't notice any lining in the butt traps I saw, just finished wood. Does anyone know if he lines/d his cavities, and if so, with what material? I have used green felt, black felt and leather but am still looking at alternatives. I have seen a cavity lined with the spray-on-type floc, but it left me cold.

BTW the Lenard Brownell coil-type cleaning rods (unfortunately he's gone now, Billingsley may still sell them) are a perfect accessory for the cavity and there's plenty of room for a jag and patches, and even a Tedd Cash oil dropper! Another alternative for a straight rod is to drill individual holes for each section like the issue Krag, to prevent rattle, with another area for the jag & patches and another hole for the Cash oil bottle. I always leave enough extra space to temporarily store the removable front sight hood when necessary and, on one rifle, have even made a small leather pouch to temporarily keep the screw-on lens covers for the Unertl scope held safely inside the cavity when shooting.
Regards, Joe

From time to time a prewar Mannlicher Schoenaur trap buttplate shows up at a gun show or on ebay. These have a big oval trapdoor, they are very nice but a little too curvy IMO to use on a rifle of substantial recoil. I have one on a much customized Winchester 52 sporter, the wood is cut out inside to take the ten shot Winchester .22LR clip.
